Text
Guy-Patrick Sainderichin & Julie Duclos

Directed by
Julie Duclos

Very loosely based on the film La Maman et la putain (The mother and the whore) by Jean Eustache

Created on October 14, 2014
at the CDN in Besançon Franche-Comté

“You spent three hours with that... what's his name? – and there's nothing to tell?"

After Fragments d’un discours amoureux (A lovers’ discourse) and Masculin/Féminin (Male/Female), Julie Duclos has chosen to pursue her exploration of desire, with humor and seriousness in equal parts. This time, the starting point is a cult film from the 1970s: Jean Eustache's La Maman et la Putain (The mother and the whore). Forty years later, the aim is to re-examine private utopias, exploring risky, confusing, dangerous models of love. Be realistic, demand the impossible! people used to say back then.

Issue of the past ? Of the present ? Of all times ? It is through dialogue with the previous generation that Julie Duclos and her actors pose these questions, using improvisation, editing, and collages. Godard is never far away, nor is Philippe Garrel and his relationship with the actor: "When the camera is rolling, you have to let the documentary about yourself happen."

The invention of acting dialogues with the writing of screenwriter Guy-Patrick Sainderichin, in a reciprocal inspiration. Theatre as a tool for probing hearts, bodies, souls? Yes, but also for taking the pulse of our present—and of what we can – or cannot – promise ourselves.

Reviews

“We are blown away by the result, by the actors' performances, the natural and dynamic shift from stage writing to cinematic language, from filmed images to the use of voice-overs. And we watch them with growing pleasure, as the 'naturalness' of their performances is matched by impeccable writing."

Fabienne Arvers
Les Inrockuptibles

“Julie Duclos proves herself to be an excellent director of actors in her ability to always let situations breathe without rushing anything. The film's post-68 euphoria is reinterpreted in the light of our present: without any judgment, but with a touch of amused nostalgia."

Hugues le Tanneur
Libération

“I truly believe that the salvation of theatre will come through actors of this caliber and directors as subtly inspired as Julie Duclos."

Joëlle Gayot
France Culture

“Witty dialogue and situations; simple and effective use of video; accurate and human characters, virtuosity of acting. Among young companies specializing in 'stage theater,' In-quarto proves to be one of the most virtuosic."

Jean-Pierre Thibaudat
Rue 89

“Julie Duclos's troupe beautifully breaks free from The mother and the whore while drawing inspiration from it. A charming, tenderly funny show that, in dealing with love, rides the wave of the undecidable to perfection."
