KLINIKEN

Created on November 9, 2021
at the Théâtre National de Bretagne

“Who decides who is sick and who is healthy? Who decides?"

In a psychiatric ward, patients meet and interact, discussing their past, their dreams and their plans. Markus is 18, so are Sofia and Roger. Maud and Martin are in their forties. There are also Anders, Anne-Marie, Mohammed... And the nurse Tomas who, from the outset, makes us wonder if he is not one of the patients.

The boundaries between sanity and madness are blurred. Wounds and secrets emerge through conversation, echoing our world and its violence. In this place where everyone does what they can, Lars Norén accompanies the characters without judging them, remaining as close as possible to their singularity.

Julie Duclos embraces the Swedish playwright's ensemble piece and, in a setting both realistic and poetic, delivers her raw but humane view on the outcasts of society. She surrounds herself with a team of actors who reveal the fragility but also the incredible strength of these characters. A camera captures them in their wanderings, grasping poetry where one expects it the least. A realistic portrayal, but also a modern-day fresco, both funny and moving, Kliniken forces us to confront ourselves and, through a mirror effect, to confront the madness of the contemporary world.

Reviews

“A stunning uppercut that leaves you speechless, a moment of dark poetry. A little theatrical gem."

Olivier Frégaville-Gratian d’Amore
L'Œil d'Olivier

“An exceptional cast of actors and actresses rises to the challenge of portraying the dizzying chaos of these intimate disorders [...] A success."

Patrick Sourd
Les Inrockuptibles

“The young director tackles Lars Norén's deeply moving play with rare subtlety, acuity, and intelligence."

Vincent Bouquet
Sceneweb

“In a clinical setting, the actors accomplish the feat of forming a family, even though each is locked in their own inner world. It is both trying and fascinating."

Philippe Chevilley
Les Echos

“We don't know if theater heals souls. But when it reaches this level of accuracy and sensitivity, it makes us more receptive to the pain of others, more tender and more human. That's why a visit to Kliniken is a must."
