MAYDAY

Text Dorothée Zumstein
Directed by Julie Duclos

Created on February 1st, 2017
at the CDN de Haute-Normandie

“May - that’s what they call me
May, for I was born in May "

MayDay is a free and wild journey back in time, a dive into memory – that is, into an infinite realm, vaster than recollection.

It all begins with an interview: to escape the ghosts of her past, Mary Burns accepts to go back in time and face the crimes she committed when she was a ten years old child. Her words will successively bring forth other female figures: Mary aged 10, her mother, her mother's mother.

Voices and images intertwine in the open air. Ultimately, as if waking from a dream, we glimpse the possibility of being, more or less, at peace with the present.

Reviews

“Responding to the fragmented form of Dorothée Zumstein's play, Julie Duclos presents the multiple perspectives of a virtuoso creation, tracing the lines of a radically dark performance."

Manuel Piolat Soleymat
La Terrasse

“Julie Duclos, who has established herself as a talented director, knows how to create an atmosphere of realism woven with dreamlike qualities, and refines a beautiful stage script, particularly in the dialogue between theatre and video."

Fabienne Darge
Le Monde

“Julie Duclos creates images of great beauty, not to fill gaps or attempt to explain, but to open up the field of empathy even further and attempt to express the inexpressible.”

Hervé Pons
Les Inrockuptibles

“The video is used with finesse, the viewer's eye moving effortlessly from the stage to the screen. The fluid action unfolds in a captivating dreamlike atmosphere.”

Benoit Solès
Transfuge

“The writing is finely crafted, energetic, and precise. The show is fluid and elegant: the changes on stage, the choreography, the rhythm of the back-and-forth between the stage and the screen—everything unfolds in a finely crafted montage.”
